Face Masks and Respirators

The CDC informs us that information regarding the effectiveness of facemasks and respirators for decreasing the risk of influenza or infection is very limited. As a result the CDC has made some recommendations based on several factors including: general health practitioners’ recommendations, historical use of face masks and respirators in other settings to help prevent the transmission of germs and viruses, and current information regarding the severity and spread of influenza and other viruses.

While there is no fool-proof way to ensure Flu and other illness prevention, the CDC does recommend a series of actions to help reduce the chances of contracting illnesses. Recommended actions for prevention of the Flu and other illnesses include:

  • Washing hands frequently with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand cleaners (like Purell or Gojo) when soap and water are not an option.

  • Reducing the effects on other parts of your supply chain.

  • Covering of the mouth and nose with a tissue whenever sneezing or coughing (this can also be accomplished by wearing a facemask).

  • Avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth where germs easily spread.

  • Avoiding work when flu-like symptoms such as aches, chills, runny nose, etc. and staying at home for at least 24 hours after the fever has subsided (unless medical care is needed).

  • Avoiding close contact, within six feet, with people exhibiting flu-like symptoms.

In situations where a virus has been discovered in your community, respirators and face masks have been recommended if you are at high-risk. More information and details can be found at the CDC website.
